PC230 Bowman 'Snipe' model steam launch

Whilst slightly outside our normal areas of expertise we are pleased to offer for sale a model of a Bowman 'Snipe' steam launch. Online research indicates Bowman Models was established in 1926 by Geoffrey Bowman Jenkins and operated from their factory at Dereham, Norfolk for 10 years until 1936 ; the Snipe, one of their best selling craft was in production from 1930-1934. For the technically minded the model is fitted with a single acting oscillating cylinder with a bore of 9.5mm and a stroke of Stroke 13.7mm. The boiler is powered by means of a meths fuelled burner (that we believe is not an original) that is hidden beneath a removable steel bow shield, that has been repainted at some stage. The piston is connected to a disc crank flywheel and in turn to the prop shaft to drive a two-blade brass propeller. Steering is by means of a preset brass tiller and rudder. The hull is crafted from wood and measures 23" long with a 4.5" beam (58 cm x 11.5 cm) and carries the model's name 'Snipe' on the bow, whilst the transom is marked R. D. Y. C., we believe customisation added by a previous owner. The removeable rear deck carries an original manufacturers transfer reading 'Hobbies Bowman Speedboat Patent' and 'Made in England' together with the company logo.

During our research we discovered an advertisement for the same model that indicated the price new was 22/6 which equates to £1.12p today, so back in the 1930's this would have been an expensive purchase! The same ad states 'runs for 30 minutes on one filling' whilst another reads 'Steam alone can give you sustained speed'. We are selling on behalf of the current owner, who acquired the model in the 1980's when it was used then on a regular basis. The passing years and an imminent house move now necessitates finding a new custodian for this fine little craft. Seeing the model has been retired for a good many years we are offering for sale as a static display model, as the boiler is untested, although we imagine in the right hands and appropriate level of expertise it could be recommissioned for further service on your local boating pond or lake. Alternatively, it looks great on static display and a fine example of toys from nearly 100 years ago. The model is in generally good restored condition but shows signs of use, commensurate with age. It also comes complete with its well used original storage box with hinge repairs to the lid. The end panel is embossed 'Bowman Snipe' and the company logo. Further detailed pictures can be supplied on request.
