Battle of Britain Period Flying Jacket - Click for the bigger picture SoldBattle of Britain Period Flying Jacket - A superb and original 'Irvin' jacket as used by RAF aircrew in the early part of WWII. This example has the large panels synonomous with pre-war jackets before wartime shortages forced the economy of the multi panel designs, which although inferior in quality, made better use of available materials. It never appears to have had a label, so we don't know the exact date of manufacture, but the pattern and short cut pile sheepskin, make it early. The leather panels are unmarked and while the half belt shows some age wear, this is a true collector's jacket and is museum quality or better! Other than one zip puller tag missing and the other a later replacement, the jacket is hard to better. We consider this item too valuable to wear as it would be a disaster to damage the pristine leather, so it is for sale as a display example for the serious collector. This jacket is a decent size c. 41" chest (105 cm)

The jacket has a Queen's Crown, but the original owner clearly served during WWII and was awarded a DFC as well as serving in Africa and Italy. In addition, he was awarded the Aircrew Europe Star, the Defence Medal, and the 1939 - 1945 Star. His final accolade was the award of a military OBE. Sadly, we do not know the owner's name, but we understand he retired as a Wing Commander. The tunic is in excellent condition and chest size is 40" regular (102 cm).

1939 Pattern RAF Flying Boots - Click for the bigger picture Sold1939 Pattern RAF Flying Boots - Synonymous with Battle of Britain Fighter Pilots, the '39 pattern are becoming increasingly rare and this is the first pair we have had in for many months. They are the early pattern with a webbing strap to the top of the leg and feature black chrome leather uppers with canvas legs and fleece linings. The boots have the original leather and canvas pullers which are stamped with the King's Crown, A.M. and indicate size 8 fitting 6 and a contract date of 1939. While the canvas legs show minor scuffing, they are in far better condition than most examples of this pattern we have had. The original leather soles are fitted, but have been recently resoled in the forepart and new heel tips fitted. The left boot has the initials T.R. written at the top of the leg, but sadly we have no idea who the wartime owner was. A great pair to display in your RAF or Battle of Britain collection.

The leg sections have been heavily repaired. In addition, the boots are fitted with period Lightning zips. The soles appear original, while the heel top pieces have been replaced. The leather shoe section is in excellent condition and these would make a perfect pair for a mannequin display (particularly if the flying suit or trousers worn over the legs), but these boots are definitely not wearers!
